Humanization in Healthcare: From Cure to Care for the Promotion of Women’s Health

Abstract

For decades, contemporary healthcare has been dominated by the traditional biomedical model. Although highly effective in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality and treating complex pathologies, this clinical-centric paradigm has progressively marginalized the psycho-social, spiritual, and value-based dimensions of patient care. In response to the growing gap between clinical efficacy and patients’ lived experiences, a shift toward a humanized and holistic healthcare model has emerged placing the individual firmly at the center of the therapeutic process. Over recent decades, increasing attention has been given to respectful, person-centered care for women and newborns. This commentary reflects on the evolution of humanized care and discusses selected Italian initiatives that illustrate its application in women’s health.
